4 Reasons Why your Appearance Matters

First impressions are everything, especially in the world of sales. And guess what? If you own a business, you're in sales.

As an expert in your field, many of you have been told that your appearance doesn't matter and that you can do anything you put your mind to. Which is all true for some professions, but not true for most. Presentation isn't just about your clothes, but your accessories, hairstyle, fragrance, posture, body language, tone of voice and the level of energy in which you speak and move. It's a full package that can make or break you.

Not sure where to begin? Here are a couple of reasons why your appearance shouldn't take the back burner in your business.

First Impressions Matter

People are constantly judging you everyday, no matter who you are or what you do. As shallow as this may seem, it's very true and will always be true no matter what.

Imagine going on a blind date. You've only really seen a couple of pictures of him on social media, but the both of you have been in constant communication via text messages and email. You're really attracted to his personality and his love for his family. After a couple of weeks of building a relationship, you both find some time to meet for a date. You're excited! You put on your favorite outfit and make your way to the restaurant. You arrive a few minutes early, only to be greeted by a guy in a wrinkly tee shirt and dingy jeans. "Hey, it's me, John. Nice to finally meet you!"

Now, I know what you're thinking. He's an amazing guy. But look how he's presented himself to you on the FIRST date. I'm sure you're second guessing the next one.

The same thing works for business. You may be the best at what you do but for someone who doesn't know you, it's important to come correct the first time around. Of course you want to remain authentic and true to you, but showing the best you, is the best thing to do.

You are your Brand

How you present yourself to the world, will reflect your business and brand. Think about some of the well known brands that you see on a daily:

What comes to mind when you think of these brands? All of these brands have created a name for themselves that represent luxury, convenience and innovation. How they come off to their customers and the rest of the world, is exactly how you want to be seen by your clients and potential clients. You want everyone who uses your products and/or services to feel like they've just made the best investment in themselves. And having buyer's remorse should be the last thing on their mind's.

When you're getting dressed in the mornings or before meeting someone, think about what your outfit says about you and whether it's in line with the message you want to communicate to the world.

Your Audience will Take you More Seriously

Dress for the job, and not like you already have the job. What do I mean by that? Present yourself in the most professional way possible. Even if you've met this client a thousand times before, dressing to a "T" will more than likely get them to sign on, if they haven't already.

When you dress professionally, you will be perceived as coming from a position of authority and leadership, so people are more likely to listen to you and be directed by you. Who doesn't want to be a respected business owner?

Your Overall Performance will Increase

Remember your middle school play, when you were picked to play the lead role? When practicing for the play, there was always a dress rehearsal. You basically rehearsed the entire play from start to finish with your costume on as if it were opening day. This made it easier for you to get into character and it really made it feel like the real thing.

Well, owning your business is the same thing. You are the lead role in your business and it's time that you start acting like it. Dressing like the professional that you are, will make you feel better about yourself and perform better. And when you feel better, you are less prone to make mistakes and have the clarity of mind to perform at your best.

You are the face of your brand and you shouldn't let the way you dress get in the way of that. Next time you're meeting with clients, conducting meetings/events and speaking in front of room full of potential clients, make sure your clothes are ironed, your hair is brushed and your shoes are shined. You'd be amazed at how much of a difference it makes.
